Immersion Ultrasonic Testing

Immersion Ultrasonic Testing (IUT) Services

As an alternative to conventional ultrasonic NDE techniques, DCLAD was the first and remains the only company in the Middle East to invest in setting-up the Immersion Ultrasonic Testing System (commonly referred to as; IUT).

The IUT is a technologically advanced NDE machine having a six-axis ultrasonic scanning mechanism, by which components and materials of any complex shape are 100% scanned for the detection of internal flaws, cracks and other imperfections. This is achieved by the immersion of the component into a water-filled tank within which the water serves as a medium to transmit high-frequency sound waves from the ultrasonic transducer at the surface, down into the submerged component. Defects get detected on the reflection of sound energy back to the transducer, which converts it into electrical signals. The location, size and orientation of any detected defects are eventually determined – with high accuracies – by the program connected to an ultrasonic flaw detector that analyzes the reflected signals.

This sophisticated set-up is far superior to the traditional ultrasonic inspection equipment considering the numerous advantages it offers:

a. Safety: Since the process is free from any form of radiation, it offers a very safe inspection methodology for both; the personnel attending the inspection and the surrounding environment.

b. Accuracy: it detects flaws with high levels of accuracy and precision, with its scanning mechanism covering the smallest of defects.

c. Versatility: it can be effectively utilized to inspect a wide range of material types of different shapes and various sizes.

d. Repeatability: it offers consistent, repeatable results across multiple cycles of inspections.

e. Reporting: it provides detailed information about the materials’ characteristics and conditions, backed with high resolution scanned images.

f. Harmless: its mechanism does not cause any damage to the components being tested.
